The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama reported two seismic events recorded on the afternoon of Monday, February 24, 2026, in the border region between Panama and Costa Rica, near Puerto Armuelles. The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.5, occurred at 3:38 pm local time. It had a depth of 19 kilometers and was located 5 kilometers south of Puerto Armuelles. According to preliminary reports, the tremors were felt in several nearby towns, but no material damage or casualties have been reported so far. Authorities are monitoring the area and recommend staying alert for updates on seismic activity. Minutes later, at 3:45 pm, a magnitude 3.4 aftershock was recorded at a depth of 15 kilometers, located 7 kilometers southeast of the same area. This second tremor was felt very strongly in various parts of the Chiriquí province. Subsequently, two more aftershocks were recorded.
